Humidification for Hospitals
When humidity is low it can affect the comfort, well-being and health of humans.
During the winter when the relative humidity inside drops, eyes, skin, nose, mouth and respiratory problems are likely to increase. Low humidity makes it easier to carry bacteria and viruses in the atmosphere. High humidity increases the risk of spreading viruses and bacteria.
To prevent the spread and proliferation of biological contaminants, ideal humidity is to maintain a relative humidity of 40% to 60%.
An accurate control of humidity will reduce problems of a dry atmosphere; helps maintain comfort, protect equipment and provide a safe place for staff and visitors at the same time whilst promoting patient health.
Why humidity matters in healthcare environments
Airborne Infections - Dry atmoshpere will cause mucous membranes in the nose and throat dry. These are our bodies natural protection against airbourne infections and without them we are more inclined to colds, flu and other viruses.
Sore Eyes & Throat - One of the first symptoms of exposure to dry atmosphere is sore eyes and a dry throat. Our eyes are very susceptible as the thin layer of moisture on the cornea evaporates quickly. Dry, sore throats are problematic for healthy people, but for patients who are nil by mouth, this increases discomfort and further reduces the body's immune system.
Increase Static & Dust - When humidity is below 40% RH the accumulation of static electricity encouraged. This is not only an annoyance and discomfort for staff & patients, but in a situation where flammable gases are used, such as an operating room, it can be very dangerous. Static also damages sensitive electronic equipment, and causes dust to rise into the atmosphere. This can make hygiene control more difficult and exacerbate the conditions of patients suffering from respiratory problems. Keeping the humidity at about 50% RH, suppresses dust and eliminates static build up.
Premature Coagulation - An atmosphere of 55-65% relative humidity is crucial in operating rooms to prevent premature clotting of wounds. Dry air absorbs moisture from all available sources in a room, including exposed wounds, leading to rapid scab formation. This is also a major concern in burns units and ITU's.
Steam is the rational choice of critical areas such as operating rooms, but humiFog is one of the few adiabatic systems certified for use in hospitals.
Traditional choices for hospital projects are gaSteam and ultimate steam.
