Humidity control for hatcheries
Climate affects health in the breeding and growing of birds. Respiratory, digestive and behavioural problems are more likely to occur in houses where climatic conditions are not controlled.
The younger the animals are, or higher their production levels, the more sensitive they become to climate conditions in the house, such as temperature and relative humidity.
At the "egg" stage, humidity levels that are too low can affect the strength and density of the shell affecting birth rate and maturity. Once hatched an ideal humidity helps the chicks through the initial stages of growth before being moved to other facilities.
Too much humidity can cause condensation in the house. Humidity control also reduces the chances of survival of micro organisms, which may be harmful to birds.
Humidity levels for chicken hatcheries
- Pre-incubation storage up to 7 days: 70-80% relative humidity to reduce the risk of dehydration.
- Pre-incubation storge for more than 7 days: 80-88% relative humidity to reduce the risk of dehydration.
- Early incubation: 0-60% relative humidity to prevent excessive moisture loss resulting in dehydrated albumen and damaged embryo.
- Growth: 50-60% relative humidity to allow the air space to develop to the correct size allowing chick's lungs to develop correctly after internal pipping.
- Development: 50-60% relative humidity to prevent wet navel and red hocks.
- Hatching: 50-60% relative humidity to prevent shell sticking to down.
- Chick pen and rroiler house first 3 days after hatching: 70% relative humidity to prevent chicks dehydrating in the first few days after hatching.
Suitable humidifiers: compactSteam, humiFog ambient, humiFog ducted, humiSteam, MCmultizone ambient, MCmultizone ducted
